Members of the O.C.D.S. are called to cultivate a deeper union with the Divine through prayer, contemplation, and the nurturing of virtues. They aspire to live out the spirit of the Discalced Carmelites, prioritizing an inner life rich with mental prayer and an ever-deepening intimacy with allegiance to Jesus Christ.
Those drawn to this sacred vocation embark on a transformative journey of formation, often spanning several years. This sacred process encompasses spiritual, doctrinal, and practical elements, designed to weave Carmelite spirituality into the very fabric of their lives.
In making a formal commitment, members embrace the lofty ideals of the Carmelite way of life, integrating a rule of life that fosters spiritual growth, community engagement, and a profound connection to the Church—all while harmonizing their secular duties.
O.C.D.S. members gather regularly in prayer, sharing spiritual nourishment and mutual encouragement. Through these sacred bonds, they foster a supportive community that uplifts each member on their journey toward holiness and a deeper communion with God.
Inspired by divine love, secular Carmelites are beckoned to serve others, becoming instruments of Christ’s compassion in their families, workplaces, and beyond. Their lives resonate with the promise that Carmelite spirituality can illuminate every corner of everyday existence.
While embracing secular realities, O.C.D.S. members remain connected to the broader Carmelite family. They joyfully participate in days of recollection, retreats, and initiatives that foster a communal spirit of grace and purpose.
Secular Carmelites walk in the footsteps of St. Teresa of Jesus, and St. John of the Cross, reading their spiritual writings practicing contemplation as sons and daughters of God under the mantle of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. Our charism is to be love at the heart of the church. The Secular Carmelites dedicate their time in contemplative prayer - attending Mass, devotions to Mary, and community meetings and formation.
In essence, the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites opens a cherished pathway to sanctity for laypersons, inviting them to weave the rich spiritual heritage of the Carmelite tradition into their lives, so they may walk ever closer to the Trinity while radiating grace in the world around them.
Mary and Joseph Carmelite Community was founded in Danvers MA at the Monastery of
St. Therese in 1987.
We have been blessed to have as our Spiritual Director, Father Leonard Copeland, OCD who has served our community by celebrating the Sacred Liturgy for us each month along with sharing many beautiful spiritual talks. His example of compassion and fervent love of Our Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary has been a source of inspiration to all of us throughout the years.
Our heartfelt gratitude and thanksgiving to Father Christopher Gomes, the Pastor of Our Lady of Fatima, who opened his parish doors to give our community a Spiritual home. We are forever grateful.
